Grandson had tears in his eyes.
G-Pop asked him what was wrong.
“I was just thinking about all those people who got killed in France. Why do people kill each other?” he inquired breathlessly.
G-Pop was taken aback. He hadn’t expected such a deep question from the youngster. Yet the boy needed an answer.
So G-Pop replied, “Sometimes we forget. We think that God can be separated from people. We contend we can worship God and hurt others. Some folks think God hates people so much that He wants us to destroy the ones we assume He has cast out. Here’s the truth: people are God so God is people. How you treat people is how you treat God. And what you believe about God is what you truly believe about His children. If God decides not to judge the human race, then who are we to think it is in our power? If God doesn’t kill them, we can’t either. We need to remember–God doesn’t need our help to be God. God needs us to be human and unashamed, and give other folks the right to be the same. What is human? Just enough God in us to love each other and just enough animal to keep ourselves on a tight leash. The murderers in Paris forgot that they were human, and in that moment of insanity, thought they were gods. Remember, my little one–God gives grace, not bullets.”
