All human beings possess a heart, soul, mind and strength. Nothing of any true significance can be achieved unless this is understood.

Y-O-U.

Or is it Why Owe You?

Here’s the truth. If you don’t find personal satisfaction in the reality of your own life, then your discontentment will trickle down to me whether I like it or not. So I have to ask you a question. Why owe you?

Why would you want to leave yourself absent of the qualities, necessities and feelings that create an atmosphere for happiness?

Why would you listen to a generation of naysayers who portray human life as complicated, festering with tribulation, instead of looking for solutions and avenues for completion?

Why do you owe yourself, instead of paying the debt which allows you to feel free of unnecessary naggings?

First of all, recognize the symptoms. Since we are heart, soul, mind and strength people, start with your heart:

How can you tell if you’re emotionally balanced, or if you owe yourself something?

The first symptom of “heart trouble” is always frustration. If you find yourself snapping at other people, honking in traffic or feeling overwhelmed by circumstances, then realize there is some desire or yearning which you’re ignoring because you either feel it’s unrealistic or undeserved.

Yes, frustration is the clue that you owe your emotions a gift.

How can you tell if you’re spiritually in debt?

Doubt. I’m not talking about the kind of doubt that creeps into all of us when encompassed by undesirable situations. I mean self-doubt which leads to human doubt, culminating in God-doubt–when the only spiritual thing you find yourself saying is, “What the hell?”

Moving along, when we are mentally short on funding for our ideas, confusion sets in.

There are folks who think they have the first signs of dementia simply because their brains are so cluttered with doubt and frustration from the heart and soul that they can’t get traction in their thinking.

Feel confused? You owe it to your brain to clear out the fog.

And finally, your body–your strength–shows that you’re indebted to yourself by the gnawing presence of procrastination.

“I’ll do it tomorrow.”

Will you feel better tomorrow? Or will you feel worse because you’re one more day delinquent.

Why owe you? Why do you allow yourself to be a day late and a dollar short in your own being?

It makes you dissatisfied and causes you to come across obnoxious to the world around you.

  • If you’re frustrated, track down the unfulfilled desire in your emotions.
  • If you’re struggling with doubt, simplify your beliefs until you can grab onto something and run with it.
  • If you’re confused, realize that you have a traffic jam of frustration and doubt that prevents you from thinking straight.
  • And if you find yourself procrastinating, realize that it’s the culmination of fear which makes you believe you can’t pull off your purposes.

You should always think about YOU.

When you don’t, you either try to become noble and end up with a persecution complex, or you become overly secretive and end up being diagnosed as neurotic.

The Alphabet of Us: T is for Truth (and also Timing)… April 20, 2015

All human beings possess a heart, soul, mind and strength. Nothing of any true significance can be achieved unless this is understood.

I couldn’t make up my mind.

I was torn between truth and timing for this week’s “T” word in the Alphabet of Us. So at length I declared a tie.

But then, as I sat down and thought about it in preparing to write this essay, I realized the reason I had such difficulty in making a selection is that the two work so harmoniously together that separating them seems to be an injustice.

First, let me start off with a couple of definitions:

“Truth is what I have learned thus far.”

Since I am neither God nor privy to all of His personal thoughts, it is ridiculous for me to walk around espousing doctrines that are not totally my own experience. This definition of truth also leaves the door wide open for further discovery.

“Timing is what I’m ready to do.”

Once again, not what I wish to do or even feel compelled to accomplish, but what has settled in my soul as truth, which I am prepared to share in some articulate form.

I’m not so sure that life is the pursuit of truth, but rather, the acceptance of it.

Because denying the truth we have experienced in favor of the truth we espouse soon turns us into hypocrites. We convict ourselves to a prison with no escape.

Likewise, choosing the wrong time to enact our plan or display our gifts can be the classic case of “pearls before swine” and “giving that which is holy to the dogs.”

So life becomes simple.

“Let me figure out what I’ve learned thus far, and then, having that inventory, let me decide what I’m ready to do to promote this goodness.”

If we begin to believe that truth exists outside ourselves, we either become too prideful or too frightened.

If we choose the wrong timing to follow our dreams, we can quickly lose faith and have our hope turned to despair.

Do I know more today than I knew yesterday?

Absolutely.

But only because I used the truth I had acquired and applied it with the correct timing.

The Alphabet of Us: L is for Love… February 23, 2015

Building block L big

All human beings possess a heart, soul, mind and strength. Nothing of any true significance can be achieved unless this is understood.

Love is marginalized and trivialized–so much so that I almost decided not to include it in our “alphabet of us.”

This is because we think love is an emotion. It isn’t.

When considering faith, hope and love, the latter is always proclaimed the greatest. Why is that?

Because hope loses its energy and faith is often overcome by doubt. But love is a decision confirmed through endurance.

Let me give you the best definition I have for love:

Love is an abiding confidence which is so secure that it is able to manifest itself through a nourishing humility.

It grants us a balance of self-worth and self-awareness. Here are the three states which initiate love:

1. I am not better than anyone else.

The insecurity of superiority is what creates loneliness.

2. I am not alone.

For after all, when loneliness arrives, it can be a terrifying state of mind, which welcomes fear into our lives.

3. I am not afraid.

And if fear is forbidden to live within us, love is given room to breathe.

True love is not being given much of a chance nowadays because our society is tormented by a contention that we’re better than one another.

  • It makes us lonely.

It generates “us against them.” And then we become convinced that there’s much to be afraid of from enemies who surround us.

I strike a blow against terrorism every day by believing that I am not better than anyone else. This causes me to realize that the planet does not belong to me, my kin or my nation.

  • I am not alone.

And because I’m not alone, and I am joined by eight billion fellow human beings who are equally as intelligent and confused.

  • I am not afraid.

Love is not the answer; it is the ongoing question.

And the question is simple: “Do I realize I’m on a journey which will only be completed when I reach the end?”
