I sat and listened quietly, almost mouse-like, as two fellows in their early thirties launched into a great debate, right before my ears, about whether the Joker, as presented in the latest film, would actually be as murderous as predicted.
The discussion became vehement, nearly volatile. Each one of the fine fellows was certain that he had a pinpoint understanding on the true character, if not mental profile, of the villain.
Internally I was smiling.
The truth is, they both could be right since the Joker is a fictitious character.
Yes—you can conjure almost any scenario about him you want in the pursuit of advertising your theory or feathering your nest with ticket sales.
Likewise, of late I have sat in the presence of my Republican and Democrat brothers and sisters as they have mused over whether Jesus would agree with some portion of their political piety. But you see, here’s the problem–in this second discussion between the politicians, they fail to remember that unlike the Joker, Jesus was not a mythical figure.
There is some actual historical confirmation of his life, quite a few renditions of his thinking, and even a record of his untimely demise, recorded for all time by the fastidious Roman Empire.
It is much more difficult to turn Jesus of Nazareth into a mascot rooting for your team.
The Republicans may want to make him conservative as the Democrats profile him as liberal, but the fact of the matter is:
Jesus was Jesonian.
He had a way of thinking, doing, being, believing, loving, caring and moving.
If you choose to study these motions and imitate them, then you might be able to call yourself a Christian. But if you’re going to ignore the biographical information available and the obvious choices he made as a human being, you may pretend he is a mythical being, but it will be very easy to prove his timeline.
Let’s be clear:
Jesus never claimed that he was “Almighty” or “a stable genius.”
He also did not profile himself to be the preacher for the poor—out to get the top one percent of rich folks.
He didn’t rail against abortion and demand that people sacrifice their free will.
But of course, he did favor children, and said they were “like the kingdom of heaven.”
Yet rather than going through a litany of issues that have been placed upon his shoulders as burdens to carry, let’s look at two things we do know about him, based upon his own words and actions:
1. On a fine afternoon, when approached by a rich, young ruler, who addressed him as “Good Master,” Jesus replied, “Why do you call me good? There’s none good but God.”
Now, Jesus had done enough kindly deeds, and dare we say, even merciful acts of miraculous proportions, to have absorbed up the word “good” without seeming to be puffed up.
But you see, he didn’t.
He portrayed that one of the great frailties of human thinking is to believe, promote and toot your horn as you trumpet your goodness to the populace.
Once again, he refused to call himself good.
2. Talking to his disciples one morning, he said, “When you’ve done that which is expected of you, call yourself an unprofitable servant.”
This was certainly an unpopular position with folks around the world who wanted to feel persecuted, let down, set aside or ignored.
Jesus made it clear that if you’re not excelling, you’re bitching.
So when it comes to those Republicans who love to talk about how great our nation is or what mighty deeds are being achieved, how they’re “the deciders,” or even how exceptional we are as a country…
Don’t get ready for Jesus to show up at the rally.
He kept his perspective.
Human beings don’t gain any power by insisting they have it.
There’s none good but God.
And for all my Democrat buddies out there, who think the bad rich people who have made money are the reason that the poor folks are unmotivated, broken, selfish and begging, they should take another gander at what Jesus really promotes before they dress him up in his blue robe and roll him out at the Convention. For Jesus said, “Stop feeling sorry for yourself. If you do what you’re supposed to do, that doesn’t even get you in the door.”
Set your GPS for the second mile.
Now, if you like this statement of Jesus, I would invite you to join me and a chosen few in living it out joyfully. If you don’t, then hang around.

G-Pop awoke with a whirl of conflicting ideas swirling in his mind, trying to find a landing space in understanding.
Good Friday.
What a joke.
Especially when you consider that the religious fanaticism which killed the Prince of Peace 2,000 years ago is still alive and insane, bombarding the innocent in Brussels.
Why do we kill?
Some people blame firearms. Yet we succeeded very ably in snuffing out human life long before there was gun powder.
Maybe it’s due to intolerance for other cultures and religions. But even in countries where there is no religion and very little culture, they kill off what they consider to be abnormal.
G-Pop decided that the next time he got together with his children, he would tell them that the reason we kill is because we are on a foolish journey to find the “best.”
It’s why Americans murder at a higher rate than Canadians. Canadian children are not taught that they always have to be supreme. American offspring are informed that they must always come off as the best.
There are only three things that can make you the best:
- Work hard and have some luck
- Cheat
- Lie
As you can see, two of the three are quite unacceptable–because after we get tired of working, we decide that deceiving people about our prowess is equally as effective as long as we don’t get caught. Or we may choose to lie about our competitors and cast them into darkness, portraying them as sinister.
It is a screwed up system.
G-Pop wants his children to know that it is a beautiful thing to chase “good” and “better,” but to always leave “best” alone.
So what is good?
Make things and bless things
Not just people–but your car, your job, your garage, and Mother Earth. Make things and bless things. You could stop right there and have a fulfilling life. Making things keeps you busy and blessing things keeps you happy.
If you still have extra time you’d like to fill, consider “better.”
Better is working within yourself. Cease comparing your efforts to others. Stop trying to advertise your fruit. Live your talent within yourself–you being your most intelligent encourager and critic.
To be happy, continue on that path and ignore the best. After all, the best is not decided by you–it is a fickle passing of the torch by fans who think they have found the next fabulous thing.
To ignore the best is to be grateful and content. What is considered the best is beyond our control, and certainly subject to the blowing winds of opinion.
2,000 years ago, people climbed a hill–not so they could see better or take in the view. They did so because something good had come their way–something that brought better ideas–a human being who insisted that those who would follow would do greater things than him.
This made them lethal because they were being threatened … by losing their status as the best.

That pretty much concludes everything. At least for now.
Every intelligent creature willing to move toward wisdom is learning. And all learning requires both a willingness to make mistakes and a desire to repent.
After billions of years, the process continues.
It’s not so much that we search for knowledge as that knowledge is waiting for true searchers. And what makes a true searcher?
That’s easy.
Not being afraid to be wrong–or at least mistaken.
Good will come. Evil will challenge. Kingdom will rise against kingdom and nation against nation.
Those who get caught up in the temporary conflict of the moment will soon be forgotten.
The earth is stronger than any of its occupants. The universe has more purpose than any poet can imagine.
But when all has been said and done–and that is unlikely to happen soon–the desire of the heart of the Creator is to bring us back to the Garden.
So how can you make sure that you’re moving toward the Garden instead of glorifying the arid desert?
1. Find enjoyable work.
Stop hanging on the cross, trying to suffer for being a grownup. Once and for all, a crucified man set us all free. Anything you do that avoids joy is wasted breath and exhausting effort.
2. Be equal partners.
Avoid those who make distinctions between men and women, colors and races, religions, sexuality and just general preferences. Equality is the only form of humility that has everlasting power.
3. Honor nature.
The Earth brings forth fruit of itself. Stand back in awe. You are not absent from the process, but rather, included. Don’t abuse your Mother and expect your Father to stand idly by, approving.
4. Meet your Creator at the end of the day and enjoy the cool of the evening.
Life is not a perpetual prayer session nor is it a fit of anger, shaking a fist at the heavens. It is understanding that there is a time for work and a time for commiserating.
5. And finally, choose life over knowledge.
As beautiful as knowledge can be, and as essential as it is to your well-being, it is life that brings you abundance.
So I speak to you:
- Use life to pursue desire.
- Employ your desire to acquire knowledge.
- Let knowledge advance science.
- Realize deep in your soul that science will always lead you to God.
- Worship God for the purpose of loving humans.
- And finally, enjoy humans to better your life.

Populie: The Battle Between Good and Evil … October 22, 2014

Sometimes I believe that the promotion of “good” is merely permission to be pious and the elevation of “evil” is just a bunch of geeks from high school, who think it’s neat to scare people with their darker side.
It ends up promoting this popular lie–populie–of “the battle between good and evil.”
Religion is enthralled with the concept because it allows for an all-powerful God to flex His muscle against a strong Luciferian army which is doomed to failure, but in the meantime frightens the world with all sorts of dastardly deeds.
Amazingly, entertainment is obsessed with the notion because it welcomes witches, demons, flying dragons and all sorts of apocalyptic paraphernalia, to keep the audience on the edge of its seat, wondering if any glimmer of goodness can survive.
Politics learned a long time ago that it’s a lot easier to motivate people by getting them to hate something than to love something.
So if we hate evil and those who perform the nefarious deeds, we can don the cloak of righteousness and represent purity to the world around us.
So the original Soviet Union was not deemed to be a dumb government complexity, but rather, must be referred to as “the evil empire” in order to create a devilish enemy.
I am weary of it all.
I am especially weary of those who tell me that I can’t believe in God unless I believe in Satan. They insist that because the Bible proclaims that this fallen angel exists as a real creature of festering fussiness, that I must embrace the ideology that surrounds him or else deny the validity of the Holy Book.
Yet when the storyline plays out in the Good Book, the saner writers tell me frankly that every temptation comes from my own lust.
I am told that God doesn’t tempt me, nor does He desire for me to be tempted.
Matter of fact, Jesus said, “Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.”
So what is evil?
Evil occurs when the good that humans could have accomplished is delayed or tabled in committee.
Good transpires when evil is stopped by humans who are thinking ahead.
To me it’s just that simple.
Every evil that has happened on the planet earth since the beginning of time has human fingerprints. There are no claw marks left behind, nor cloven hoofprints. It always has something to do with someone who just failed, in some way or another, to love his or her neighbor as themselves.
We are drawn away by our own lusts.
Love is available to us but it does not allow us to dominate or destroy, so instead, we pursue lust.
- It is the source of all iniquity.
- It is the source of all evil.
As long as we believe that we are the pawns in a gigantic chess game between God and Beelzebub, we will fail to take responsibility for our own deeds and instead, act helpless when we’ve been given the power of a sound mind instead of a spirit of fear.
I know there will be many people who disagree with me, and since I do not hold the golden key to universal truth in my hand, these detractors may be right.
But I don’t think we become better people by blaming an outside force for our own damned laziness.
