Just Jim Dandy

It is just Jim Dandy with me

If you hunt deer, rabbit, bear and flea

As long as you teach your children

That brothers and sisters with black skin

Are not niggers, jungle bunnies or monkeys.

Share your heart about your anger over abortion

As you visit the fatherless and the widows

Chat away about climate change and the melting of the polar ice caps

But please cease to refer to hard-working people who do not share your concern as “deplorable.”

Salute the flag, stand for the Star Spangled Banner and support the troops

Struggling with all of us to bring freedom and justice to every American

Choose to deny the existence of God and develop your own moral code

While honoring your neighbor nearby and the sanctuary where others gather to worship

Express your dismay over illegal immigration

While making sure your laments have nothing to do with race, religion or sexual orientation

Yearn for simpler times by keeping things simple

Joke about women and comically complain about men

Remembering that God in His Kingdom has neither male or female.

Make sure your belief is grounded in love

Your opinion has a little elastic on the edges

And decisions are merciful instead of final

Welcome to America!

Be yourself just short of being an asshole.

It’s just Jim Dandy to have you here.

Jesonian: Reverend Meningsbee (Part 17) Parking Lotsa… August 21st, 2016

 Jonathots Daily Blog

Reverend Meningsbee

It was apparently the Sunday that would never end.

As Meningsbee headed out the door of the church, evicted from the House of God by Sister Matrisse, standing next to his car was a smiling Sammy Collins, with all the jovial attributes of a freshly pardoned Thanksgiving turkey.

Sammy rushed toward him, vigorously shook the pastor’s hand, and gave him a huge “Day of Pentecost” bear hug–the kind that leaves you torn between appreciation and embarrassment.

Releasing his grip, Sammy blurted, “Are you prepared to take in about fifty ready-to-go souls who already know where the exits are and the location of the bathrooms?”

With this he laughed–very pleased with his joke, which he obviously had rehearsed.

Meningsbee crinkled his face. This gave Brother Collins permission to continue.

“Whoo-ee! We had a big blow-up this morning down at the church at the Holiday Inn Express–so much so that the front desk lady came and told us to tone it down. We were bothering the other guests who were still enjoying their continental breakfast.”

“What was the problem?” said Meningsbee, concerned.

“I confronted him,” said Sammy. “Yes, I confronted Patrick Swanson about what he said to you in my living room the night I invited you over to fellowship in my home.”

“You heard?” asked Meningsbee.

“Yes. I snuck in the dark room where my kids keep their toys–nearly tripped over a Tonka truck–but I was curious why Patrick wanted to talk to you. Never one to be shy, I decided that since it was my home, I had the right to know.”

“So you’re the one who told everybody in the church about our conversation.”

“Absolutely.”

“Well, he thought it was me,” cited Meningsbee.

“Sorry about that, but I had to let him think that way until I could get all the friends and neighbors organized for the revolt, and the opportunity to return to the Garsonville Church–our home church. Preacher, most of my kin is buried out there in the back section of the property. I could show you their gravestones. This is my church. This is where I want to live. This is where I want to die. So we’re comin’ back.”

Meningsbee stood quietly. The joy on Sammy’s face had disappeared quickly as he told his tale of dissension and vengeance. He was now flushed and also a bit bewildered about why the good reverend was not jumping up and down for the chance to include more sheep and coffer stuffing.

Meningsbee realized he had to say something. “Sammy, Sammy, Sammy. I love ya’. But the church is not a club, though it might seem that way since we collect weekly dues. It’s not a game. The choices we make are often life and death. You must believe me when I tell you that the church also is not a family reunion, though we are all part of the same bloodline. God knows, it’s not a political party. We’ve already chosen our leader. Sammy, well…it’s an adventure. Or maybe a competition. Yes, it’s an adventurous competition, to see who can love their neighbor as themselves the most and still remain deliriously happy.”

Sammy’s dark cloud burst. “Listen, Meningsbee, I didn’t come for a sermon.”

“Oh, you’ve gotta forgive me,” said the pastor. “I didn’t get to preach one today so I guess I felt a little cheated.”

Sammy frowned like a frowning man frowns when frowning is in order. “So you don’t want us?”

“I don’t get to choose,” said Meningsbee. “I was just explaining to you how we view the kingdom of God.”

So … Sammy Collins turned on his heel and walked back to his car sadly because he was very religious.

G-Poppers … March 25th, 2016

 Jonathots Daily Blog

(2878)

Jon close up

G-Pop awoke with a whirl of conflicting ideas swirling in his mind, trying to find a landing space in understanding.

Good Friday.

What a joke.

Especially when you consider that the religious fanaticism which killed the Prince of Peace 2,000 years ago is still alive and insane, bombarding the innocent in Brussels.

Why do we kill?

Some people blame firearms. Yet we succeeded very ably in snuffing out human life long before there was gun powder.

Maybe it’s due to intolerance for other cultures and religions. But even in countries where there is no religion and very little culture, they kill off what they consider to be abnormal.

G-Pop decided that the next time he got together with his children, he would tell them that the reason we kill is because we are on a foolish journey to find the “best.”

It’s why Americans murder at a higher rate than Canadians. Canadian children are not taught that they always have to be supreme. American offspring are informed that they must always come off as the best.

There are only three things that can make you the best:

  • Work hard and have some luck
  • Cheat
  • Lie

As you can see, two of the three are quite unacceptable–because after we get tired of working, we decide that deceiving people about our prowess is equally as effective as long as we don’t get caught. Or we may choose to lie about our competitors and cast them into darkness, portraying them as sinister.

It is a screwed up system.

G-Pop wants his children to know that it is a beautiful thing to chase “good” and “better,” but to always leave “best” alone.

So what is good?

Make things and bless things

Not just people–but your car, your job, your garage, and Mother Earth. Make things and bless things. You could stop right there and have a fulfilling life. Making things keeps you busy and blessing things keeps you happy.

If you still have extra time you’d like to fill, consider “better.”

Better is working within yourself. Cease comparing your efforts to others. Stop trying to advertise your fruit. Live your talent within yourself–you being your most intelligent encourager and critic.

To be happy, continue on that path and ignore the best. After all, the best is not decided by you–it is a fickle passing of the torch by fans who think they have found the next fabulous thing.

To ignore the best is to be grateful and content. What is considered the best is beyond our control, and certainly subject to the blowing winds of opinion.

2,000 years ago, people climbed a hill–not so they could see better or take in the view. They did so because something good had come their way–something that brought better ideas–a human being who insisted that those who would follow would do greater things than him.

This made them lethal because they were being threatened … by losing their status as the best.

Listen! Stop! Look! … July 21, 2014

 Jonathots Daily Blog

(2298)

stop look listen

Listen!

Don’t assume you’ve heard it all.

Allow your brain a chance to receive the freshness of a new insight.

People are always telling you their story.

They will let you know where it hurts.

They will inform you of what they need.

Sometimes they bury the lead under a joke.

Often they disguise the anguish beneath religiosity.

But listen.

Allow yourself to believe there’s more.

He that has an ear, let him hear.

Stop!

Yes, cease to believe that you’ve heard it all and know it all.

Don’t try to fix people.

Find a way to input them in the space they’ve provided.

Stop trying to save the world.

Instead, give people a chance to grow.

Don’t be so sure you know the will of God.

Because after all, it’s not His will that any should perish.

Don’t allow yourself to be so far behind the times that you’re chasing truth.

Stop repeating things that don’t work.

Start anticipating fresh blessings every day.

Look!

  • For ways to bless people.
  • For ways to hug people.
  • For ways to touch people.
  • For ways to make people laugh.
  • For ways to drop a dollar at just the right moment.
  • For ways to learn.
  • For ways to avoid too much work.
  • For ways to lift a burden.
  • For ways to establish your humanity.
  • For ways to be forgiving.
  • For ways to be vulnerable.
  • For ways to accept that people are the closest thing to God you will see today.

Listen!

Get your ears on.

Stop!

Selling an agenda.

Look!

For God.

He’s out there.

G-16: Monkey Angels … March 21, 2014

Jonathots Daily Blog

(2182)

G pic

It takes billions of years to evolve billions of years.

Therefore, it stands to reason that following billions of years, billions of things probably happened.

Yes, in the culmination of billions of years, the universe was birthed–with a tiny little baby planet called Earth, occupied by a bizarre diversity of flora and fauna, sharing one common concern: survival.

It is a situation which Nature blindly accepts, but a Creator ponders:

  • Is there more than survival?
  • Can a creature be brought forth from the jungle and be granted an emotional awareness, a deeper mental capacity and a spiritual yearning?

Monkey angels.

The Creator formed a being which was unwelcome in the arms of Mama Gorilla, and required a bit of rehab in order to hob-nob with the angels–a homey with no natural home.

Human: monkey angels.

A little bit of everything tossed in the crankcase, never quite certain if the engine will actually turn over.

Monkeys are unimpressed and angels are baffled. Are we a joke? A drunken experiment? A paradox? A mystery? Or the pride of the original “Big Banger” Himself?

It certainly explains why we feel insecure. It clarifies our nagging sensation of not belonging. It justifies the search to find ourselves.

It is why our monkey curiosity caused us to choose the wrong tree, leaving our angel abandoned in the jungle, needing the garden. We require both a cage and the freedom of the sky.

The entire creation of monkey angels seems a bit tongue-in-cheek. It is suited to those who have the playfulness of the chimpanzee and the resilience of an archangel.

Monkey angels: more than survival–chasing the banana for further study.

Jesus and Me … September 8, 2013 Number 2000

Jonathots Daily Blog

 Calvary

Jesus and me are going to Flint

Jesus is mighty smart

Me is trying to learn

Jesus is looking for people who care

Me is working on trying not to be careless

Jesus loves everybody

Me likes most

Jesus wants to save the lost

Me is struggling to keep from getting lost

Jesus demands repentance

Me needs some of that of my own

Jesus pursues the least

Me still favors the most

Jesus is willing to die for the world

Me  wants to live a little bit longer

Jesus doesn’t worry very much

Me doesn’t need much to worry

Jesus knows the hearts of people

Me does a lot of guessing

Jesus believes in good cheer

Me likes to joke

Jesus knows Flint has struggled

Me understands struggle

Jesus made the lame to walk

Me walks a little lame

Jesus is coming again

Me is leaving sooner or later

Jesus was human

Me, too

Jesus was tempted

Me, daily

Jesus was touched by sickness

Me, just last week

Jesus will appear in Flint through Spirit

Me will show up in the flesh: lots of it

Flint, I wish I could offer you more

But for now you are stuck with me …

This troubadour
