Bringing Heaven Down to Earth
I’ve never particularly liked the word “spiritual.”
Since we humans are mortal and flawed, it seems presumptuous for us to think that we can be declared spiritual.
But I believe it is absolutely essential for us to become spirited.
And spirited is the ability to create something in your own image and breathe life into it.
It’s what we are told that God did with humans.
So therefore, humans who wish to incite a “divine possibility” must likewise take things that are inert and give them breath.
It is too easy to complain about Earth, thinking that Heaven is going to be better.
What if we get to Heaven and arrive with a bad case of PTSD? In other words, the shock of the war on Earth has left us frightened—leery of choirs of angels and trumpets blowing?
We have a simple mission:
To take what we believe Heaven possesses and generate an Earthly model.
In doing so, our complaining will ebb.
Our negativity becomes embarrassed.
And we start looking for evidence of intelligent life on the Third Planet from the Sun.

1967.
Fall came. Fall fell.
It seemed to me that the autumn leaves, as they tumbled from the trees, were mocking me for my lack of purpose.
I was bored.
I was also infested by a scratchy discontentment–an itch. I wanted my driver’s license. I was so close.
Even more infuriating was that Jack, from my class, had gotten his license because he’d flunked the sixth grade and was older than the rest of us. Sporting his beat-up Chevy, he drove as a god among us. Suddenly a fellow that normally made the lasses of our class say “yuck” when he walked by was the center of attention from these fair young maidens. Everybody wanted to ride in Jack’s car.
It was aggravating to any young boy in Central Ohio with a shred of dignity and an overabundance of arrogance. That would be me.
I convinced my older brother to take me to a parking lot behind the high school on Sunday afternoons to practice driving, since we knew that the local cop was always at his church teaching the youth group during that time.
The terrifying part of the whole rehearsal was the spectre of having to pass the test on parallel parking. Some local citizen had placed two markers in the back lot by sticking a broomstick in a bucket of cement so that teenagers could put themselves through the paces of trying to place a two-and-a-half ton automobile into the tiny enclosure.
I think what frightened me the most was that I heard through the grapevine that you had to get your tires within six inches of the curb or you would fail. Who could do such a thing? This was a deed more suited for the gods of Chrysler.
But finally, since clocks do move forward, December 18th rolled around and I went to get my license.
As it turned out, I was the last prospect of the day for an instructor who was on his way home to Pennsylvania for Christmas. He was giddy, overjoyed and in a hurry.
The whole test took three-and-a-half minutes–and there was no parallel parking.
Being a stupid teenager, I asked him why we had skipped it. He looked at me, bewildered, like a man who had given a friend a thousand dollars and was wondering why his buddy was commenting on the wrinkles in the bills. He smiled, patted me on the shoulder and said, “Good luck, and drive safely. And Merry Christmas.”
I was a licensed driver. I, too, could be a god–even though it was going to be God Two in our school.
What did I learn during this experience? What lesson concerning worry and trepidation was passed on to me about how life is never what we think it’s going to be?
Well, since I have a tendency to adhere to an unnecessary parcel of negativity, what did I learn?
Not much.

Populie: You Can’t Trust Anybody … August 27, 2014

I’m not so sure when it became so popular to be cynical. Under the guise of being streetwise or intellectual, we seem to have become so jaded to one another that relationships are difficult to begin.
Matter of fact, if you go to an average church service, somebody will tell a story about how bad things are and how evil people can be.
It’s difficult to go to a movie or watch television without being pummeled with a revelation of the depravity of humankind.
And politicians are always asking for trust from the public while treating us like ignoramuses.
The general population seems to agree on only three things:
- People are no good.
- Protect yourself.
- Matter of fact, strike first.
So the popular belief that there are dangers in the world becomes the populie that “you can’t trust anybody.”
I refuse to live that way.
To make sure that I’m not devastated by unruly individuals, here are three precepts I use in dealing with the world around me:
1. People are self-involved.
It doesn’t make them bad. It just means that if you can’t establish how your project is to their personal advantage, they will either ignore you or lose interest very quickly.
2. It’s up to me to know my stuff.
For instance, I’m going to purchase an amp today. I did my homework. I read up on it, I found out what it should cost and I have a fairly complete comprehension of what I’m willing to do. Remember–it’s not that people cheat us, but rather, we set ourselves up to be cheated by being ignorant of our material.
3. And finally, go the second mile.
You will be astounded at how good you feel if you do your part, but also bring along a little extra in case others fail.
It’s not that you can’t trust anybody. but rather, that trust is based on the knowledge that we’ve done all we know to do, and we’re not expecting anyone else to do our part.
I do not know how we can live in a world that talks about unconditional love while simultaneously sprouting horrible attitudes toward one another.
You can choose to indulge in the nagging negativity of our society, which targets our fellow-men as losers if you wish.
I just believe it’s impossible to ask God for His grace and mercy…if all you give to your brothers and sisters is a nasty, bratty shove-off.

G-7: Move or Stay… January 17, 2014

It is not healthy to remain in an unhealthy situation.
This might seem an obvious assertion, unless you consider that people have a tendency to do what is “normal” instead of what is beneficial.
We just get used to stuff. Then we convince ourselves that it’s meant to be, God’s will, our lot, a cross to bear, or even worse, a mission field.
Keep in mind, you have a certain amount of energy. It is a daily gift which should be used wisely–because honestly, it can’t be conserved. You can’t save up Tuesday’s passion for a Thursday adventure.
So we have to be careful to be in surroundings that move us. And if we’re not moved, then we need to move. Staying is not an option.
How do you know?
1. Is there a hunger and thirst for life? If you’re surrounded by an atmosphere of negativity, despair and complaining, it’s going to be very difficult to forge a future. Even if they’re your relatives, it doesn’t change the level of obnoxious.
2. Is there change in the air? Human beings are either evolving or they’re going extinct. It’s just the natural order. If there isn’t a sense of wonder about innovation, you will start settling for things instead of choosing them.
3. Is there enough heart around you to be touched? There are individuals who think it’s adult to remain aloof and free of emotion. I will agree that too much sensitivity becomes annoying. But if a climate of your choosing does not have people in it who are capable of being touched in the heart, then you have to depend on them to be spiritual. Human beings are not naturally spiritual. Or you’re expecting on them to be smart all the time. (I don’t think I have to even speak to that.) The ability to be emotionally impacted is a sign of mental health.
4. And finally, is there still an abiding faith? Listen to the next five things the people around you say. Is there anything positive in them? Of course, we can all get aggravated and turn dark in our mood, but generally speaking, if the next five things said don’t have love and encouragement, you have found yourself in a dark cave where light is considered an intrusion.
Of course, you can continue to stay in bleak environs and try to be “this little light of mine.” But remember–there’s a reason people have chosen the path of despair, and they won’t be satisfied until you despair along with them.
The most important decision you will make in your life is where to invest your ching.
And if you stay where there is no movement, you will eventually be forbidden to move those who stay.
