G-Pop took a few moments last night to talk to his godson.
The young man is personable, with potential dangling from him, similar to a bunch of electrical cords that need to be plugged in somewhere. Like so many of us, he just doesn’t know which cord goes into which socket.
It begins with a simple understanding: 80% of what we think is born in our fear.
G-Pop wishes he could proclaim that our thoughts are grounded in our faith or our devotion, but it’s not true. Faith, hope and charity have no chance until fear is confronted, tracked down and put in its place. So our thoughts scream from this fear.
Now, 90% of what we fear comes from what we see and hear.
If we surround ourselves with fearful people saying fearful things about a fearful world, we should not expect a great fountain of creativity to spring forth from our souls.
For instance, here’s a simple point about gun control in America: the problem is not the gun. The difficulty lies in the fact that what we see and hear about guns always has them with the barrel pointed at a human. If you go to Canada, you’ll see lots of guns. But they’re pointed at deer and moose. The Canadians don’t have a constant programming of seeing and hearing about guns pointed at other human beings.
In America, we would frown on a gun being pointed at an animal, but our guns are constantly pointed at human beings. Therefore, what we see and hear becomes our fear and our fear becomes what we think. And we think that guns are for killing people, not rabbits.
And the final statistic that G-Pop presents is that 100% of what we see and hear should be our choice.
So you will think from your fear.
Your fear comes from what you see and hear.
And if you sacrifice what you see and hear to what the pundits want to thrust down your throat or what your friends insist will make you cool, you will be at the mercy of the fear that is produced by these visions.
G-Pop’s godson is just like all of us.
He needs to learn that our thinking is controlled by our fear; our fear is manipulated by what we see and hear, so if we take authority over what comes into our eyes and ears, we begin to change our fear to faith and our faith can work to produce love.
Three final points set this in motion:
1. Run from strife.
Whenever you see people fighting for the hell of it, get yourself away.
2. Walk away from gossip.
Gossip is just violence in training.
3. Sit with good cheer.
When you find people who are looking for hope, who are smiling through the difficulties and trying to create unity and joy, sit your butt down.

G-Pop was born years ago on a day like this one, repeated annually.
Born, G-Pop decided to seize the opportunity to live, dwelling in a small village until limited talent afforded broader possibilities.
Trying to blend aspiration, inspiration and procreation, he birthed songs and sons, four boys in all, three surviving the process of growing, and yet a trio of others who arrived desiring a homestead, and seemingly have moved on, no worse the wear from his tutelage.
He traveled the country, interfacing with those who crossed his path and turned in his direction.
Pain and pleasure merged to form potential.
Success and failure united to construct a character.
Being neither political or bound by business constraints, G-Pop chased the whim of his heart and the vision he insisted was inspired by Spirit.
He had a belief in a God who believed in people–belief in people who allow room for an expansive God.
G-Pop lives on.
There are those who think he should settle into his place. Yet finding a place is an address, not a way to address our generation’s quandary.
G-Pop does not seek acceptance, just a reasonable doorway.
Mary had a baby and named him…
He became an angel to some, shepherded the souls sent his way, and works on becoming a wiser man … who can follow the stars in the sky.

I’m a high school creative writing teacher. At the start of every year I identify a few really talented students, and more often than not, they end the year under-achieving–or even tanking–while students with average abilities work hard and rise to the top. I’m beginning to question my definition of talent. What’s yours? And how can I inspire these so-called stars to reach their potential?
Talent is a capacity for success.
Nothing more, nothing less.
We make two major mistakes when we discuss talent.
Neither is true.
The major talent that all human beings are given is life.
The deterrent to talent is always perspective.
For example, if your mom and dad gave you life and also refrained from teaching you that life sucks, you have a chance to take that life, discover ability and then turn it into prosperity.
I do not want to evaluate your choices as a teacher. You certainly have a fine education and your own way of doing things.
Yet writers are not hatched nor are they coddled into production.
A writer is someone who has a story and is always looking for better and more concise ways to tell it.
Simply because someone has sentence structure or a comprehension of syntax does not make him or her a writer. As with every occupation or calling, the impetus comes from passion, not from the accumulation of knowledge.
If I found myself in your position, I suppose I would pick out the assignments that stimulate that inner anxiety to express, and then let those missions isolate the writers from those who merely have a grasp of grammar.
Yes, it is the work that defines the talent, not the talent that dictates the work.
Just as there are many athletes in the world but very few who actually can be counted on for performances on demand, the same is true with everything–including writing.
I don’t write unless I have something to share that burns so deeply inside me that I have no choice but to try to translate it into words.
I guess my definition of a good teacher is someone who allows people to find their own talent … without suggesting where it might be hiding.
