1 Thing You Can Do to Become a Great Patriot

DON’T

React, Resent, Reject, Regress

OR BE

Rude, Rowdy, Racist, Raunchy

THIS IS NOT WHO WE R

REASON

The colonists who settled the Americas were most concerned about wording. They realized that in the future, in studying their original thoughts on creating a perfect union, the words would make a huge difference. So they struggled, parsed and edited—writing documents to include as many people, situations and lifestyles as they could possibly imagine.

Out of that effort came phrases such as:

All men are created equal”

“Truths that are self-evident”

“Government by the people, of the people and for the people”

“Liberty and justice for all”

Even though these men were chauvinists, racists, wore powdered wigs and snorted opium, they were still aware that the greatest power we possess as people is to reason. So:

I will reason

You will reason

Until we discover together the reasonable solution.

G-Poppers … August 24th, 2018

“People are stupid.”

This is a statement that seems to be flying through the air twenty-four hours a day, as our society becomes convinced that gaining supremacy over other people is best achieved by insulting them and striking out at their character and intelligence.

Unfortunately, there is way to stop this onslaught without getting ground up in the gears of the mechanism.

So today I offer my last G-Popper.

It has been a great run.

Sharing the wisdom of cordiality and gentleness through the eyes of a grandfather was something I felt, many months ago when I began this column, to be a kind way of expressing the change that needs to be set forth among us all.

But it is important for all organisms on Earth to evolve with the times.

So starting next week I will have a new column on Friday entitled “Sit Down Comedy.” It will be a combination of observations mingled with a humorous peek into how we turn our everyday journey into a sixteen-lane freeway instead of just honoring a path.

And of course, in the process we will determine the difference between a stupid idea and trying to tie that misstep with the people who often accidentally stumble into believing it.

We will use video. We will use audio. We may use music. And just a little bit of writing to express the ways to escape stupidity without declaring people stupid.

It will be simpler than G-Poppers but no less sincere.

So I look forward to seeing each and every one of you next week for “Sit Down Comedy,” when we can sit down and reason together… and use the comedy to ease some of the pain.

To Truly Be

by Jonathan Ric

Three boys sit at my table

Too young to consider much

The world swirls around them

They need to develop some trust

What shall I suggest to them?

What truths are unscathed from the warfare of compromise?

Shall I tell them not to lie when lying is a national pastime?

Will they believe that being kind is possible for our race?

Or will they watch the atrocities committed in the name of God and country?

Will they honor women as equals and make amends

Or leer and jeer at the lasses, declaring them stupid with their careless friends?

Is the Golden Rule for saints

As gold, ruling the world, is touted as worth?

Can I teach them not to cheat when it seems that cheaters prosper?

Can I speak to them of God when others deny He lives?

Can they learn the power of humility and all the true grace it gives?

Do I have the courage to differ from the passive horde of sheep?

Or is my soul slowly dying and my conscience falling asleep?

I pass the food around the table and look at the young men before me

It’s time to shine

It’s a season of reason

Dear God, grant to me

The willingness to truly be

Our reader today is Jasson. He lives in Nashville, Tennessee, with three sons and his wife, Deahna

pohymn-reasoning

Reasoning With Me

I am not always right

I am not usually right

I am not always wrong

I am not usually…

Wait a second!

What should I say?

I am not usually wrong?

What is usually?

More than half?

Am I wrong more than half the time?

Am I right more than half the time?

What dare I claim?

What is the truth about me?

Sometimes I don’t know if I’m right or wrong

Why am I so perplexed?

Because I’ve invested myself in me

I need things to pay off

Otherwise people will think I’m risky business

So should I lie about being wrong

To improve my right percentage?

But what if I get caught in a lie?

Is it worse to be wrong or to lie?

Which is forgivable?

And can I fool people?

For how long?

I would certainly have to believe they’re stupid

Why do I want stupid friends?

Why would they want a lying, dumb acquaintance who’s wrong over half the time?

Could I lie sometimes and tell the truth on other occasions?

What if I get it mixed up?

Is my status more important than the truth?

If so, why do I need the truth in the first place?

I can just construct a good story and then sell it

But then, who would I be able to believe?

Who could I trust?

And who is outsmarting me?

Maybe the truth does make you free

Free from bumbling, crumbling, tumbling and stumbling lying.

PoHymn Dec. 23

At The End

I am not a terrorist

Nor angry, avid Baptist

Not a bloke on a “watch out” list

Just overweight.

I am not a vicious killer

Won’t find me a Hades filler

Sometimes even a “God willer”

Still, often dumb.

Never lost to hesitate

Got some good things as I wait

Chasing sense instead of fate

Somewhat forgetful.

My soul is never just “all’s well,”

Yet far from a devil’s hell

I zip my lip more than I tell

I can be quite boring.

Life is not about the race

Who we follow or do we chase

Sometimes wool and others, lace

I rejoice in my common.

PoHymn Happy

Happy

Discovering I’m not so smart

Is the more intelligent start

Shedding a needful tear

Dispels some lingering fear

Quelling the push to win

Relieves the greedy sin

For an appetite of reason

Flourishes in every season

Stopping to feel compassion

Shall always be in fashion

To escape the festering mean

By having a heart that’s clean

While replenishing the broken road

Lifting the burdensome load

Refusing to be ignored

By those cynical and bored

And dodging the critic’s choice

Maintaining a hopeful voice

For happiness is not what happens to me

But rather, the person I choose to be.
