During the bar fight which was advertised to be a Presidential election, G-Pop became very concerned that intangibles necessary to the human family were being ignored, if not attacked.
The funny thing about intangibles is, they should become tangible. In other words, they must gain some reality or we start to fade in the heat of the day. The three most famous are faith, hope and love.
So G-Pop contacted his children and grand-children and asked them to give him definitions of the three words.
The twelve-year-old went right to the dictionary and came up with very astute, well-rounded wordings.
Faith: believing in something not seen.
Hope: pursuing a dream.
Love: a committed affection.
The teenager and budding young woman had very clever answers.
Faith: trusting the map when it’s foggy
Hope: car won’t start–try again
Love: sharing the last of your favorite food.
And that delightful daughter-in-law wrote to G-Pop, telling him that she would suggest:
Faith: believing without proof
Hope: hanging in there
Love: placing someone above your own needs.
And at the last moment a son popped in, sharing:
Faith: believing what you cannot see
Hope: believing in what can be
Love: believing in the capacity of another.
Such great insights. G-Pop sat back for a moment, encouraged. After all, it is a grave injustice to allow faith, hope and love to sit on the shelf in the bookstore of life, waiting to be read.
They are active. For instance:
Faith is churning.
It is the sensation that we’re going to bust if we don’t get an opportunity to take what we think and treasure, and put it into practice.
Hope is a yearning.
It is catching a glimpse of something magnificent and rather than placing it in a book of memories, trying to transfer it onto every “things to do today list.”
And love is a burning.
It is fire deep in our souls which warms us with the notion that the more we treat others with respect and understanding, the greater the chance for us to receive the same.
The family members who responded to G-Pop were basically in the age group which is loosely referred to as “millennials.”
But they get it.
They comprehend how to translate selfish motivations to higher intangibles of universal mercy and acceptance.
The bar fight ended like all bar fights–each thug claiming victory in some way.
Now it is up to those who broke up the fight and separated the hooligans … to bring us back to an understanding of the churning of faith, the yearning of hope and the burning of love.

Without giving, there is no getting without taking. Therein lies the dilemma that causes strife, poverty and war.
But can we give without regretting?
1. Start with what you don’t want anymore.
The fact is, your junk is somebody else’s treasure or need. I have a rule that if anything has sat around my house for more than four months without being used, it is time for eviction. There are exceptions with seasonal objects, but generally speaking, 90 to 120 days is the line.
Any city in America in which the entire populace would get rid of their extra stuff would cause 85% of the need in that town to be eliminated through distribution.
2. Think ahead–make it your idea.
When you wait for people to beg you for money or try to guilt-trip you into giving, you not only will give less, but you will be reluctant to hang around in any atmosphere where there might be need. That would be very unfortunate for your soul. I personally like Saturday night at 9:00 P.M. After the weekly finances have come in and the weekly expenditures have been taken care of, I say to myself, “What do I want to give this week and where do I want to target it?”
When you have personal control, you will find that a true sense of spirituality enters your being instead of a false religion of submission.
3. Give to those who can’t give back to you.
When you give, expecting people to also reciprocate in your direction, you can become frustrated due to the amnesia that often follows when people are fulfilled.
But when you give to those who can’t give back, you have no anticipation whatsoever of receiving anything from them, but instead, have granted yourself the power of self-fulfillment.
If you will apply these three things to your giving, you will not only sense empowerment through your choices, but you will chase regret out the door, down the street … disappearing from your life.

Everyone wants to be unique–yet no one wants to be peculiar.
Unique means “one of a kind.” To gain that individuality, you have to step away from the herd, chew your grass differently and end up producing fortified milk.
But in our society unique is defined as “doing what I want in the moment.” The absence of finding a position makes it unclear to those around where to find you.
Our culture teaches this ridiculous concept: let me reap and then I’ll sow–I promise.
In other words, “give me a reason to become excited and I’ll become excited.”
“Give me money and I’ll invest.”
“Give me a climate where everyone agrees with my philosophy, and I’ll embrace them with love.”
“Give me the funds for education, the books for reading and the classroom for receiving and I will eventually turn into a student.”
“Give me sex and I’ll consider love.”
“Grant me financial security and I will give my best impersonation of happy.”
“Take away hassle and I will try not to be grumpy.”
“Remove intimidation and bullying and I will show up to give you a better adequate performance.”
“Take away all the things that make life human and I will show you how divine I can be.”
This insipid thinking revolves around the word “unconditional.”
Let’s look at the way it was meant to be from the foundation of the world:
I promise to sow so I can reap.
There is nothing that will be harvested from our life journey unless we have first planted our seed.
There is nothing that is guaranteed without our focus and commitment.
And there is no way that reaping will occur before sowing–or the entire cosmos will implode.
I sat around a table last night with family and friends to celebrate my birthday. But we did not celebrate the passing of a year adding to my longevity. What we celebrated was my belief in the treasure of sowing … to reap.
Stop cheating yourself out of the joy of human life. You will never reap until you sow. No matter how much you plead and beg for a loan from the universe, the heavens will turn a deaf ear … until you can bring collateral.

Faith without passion is dead on arrival, struck down in the street by a big yellow bus of reality.
Fact is, if you can’t get people emotionally involved with their faith, mental assent, physical presence and spiritual study are very poor substitutes. After all, our heart holds our treasure, and our treasure occupies our heart.
As I journey this weekend to Coloma, Michigan, this is fresh on my mind.
I want to place the fire of desire inside my life. Now, that is merely a clever phrase unless it is defined by saying that my journey needs to include a “dare to care” attitude. Caring is not natural. It is something we have to turn on like a switch and purpose to accomplish, otherwise we lull ourselves into a sleepiness of believing that we’re really compassionate.
Shake the earth. The best way for me to shake the earth is by actually following a simple concept: be the person you admire. Instead of sitting around commenting on virtuous behavior, turn into the biggest copycat that ever stole a good idea.
Also, I would like to start speaking the word of justice. That means I need to learn to talk about rights, because they change wrongs. No one has ever successfully preached against wrongs to make things right. I need to believe that goodness has appeal instead of contending that I’m on the losing team until I get to heaven.
And finally, I want to tell the folks in Coloma this weekend to try to become part of the “sane that remain.” Life is an expedition, so don’t think you’re going to come without provisions, water and patience and survive the safari. There will be a need to outlast your critics. And why do people criticize? Because right now it isn’t popular. That’s not to say it wasn’t popular in the past, or that a great breath of common sense will not bring it into vogue again. It’s just important to realize that if you’re going to have passionate faith, you will have to endure to the end.
So here we come, Coloma: faith with passion.
For in a world of dimness, a single candle can illuminate the path.
