Paralyzed by the immobility of a weary exasperation, I pause, waiting for the Senate of Sitters, the House of Misrepresentation, the President of Whim and the Court of Supreme Confusion to hatch a single egg of an idea from their coop of chickens.

I would suggest that it’s time for each of us to step up and become the solution before we are drug into the quicksand of indecision and suffocated by lameness.

So therefore, may I suggest the following mission statement:

A lways

B elieving in the persistent power of goodness

C oncerned

D eeply in our portion of the responsibility of carrying the banner of possibility, we

E ffectively craft a plan of action which has historical awareness, future vision and a great sensitivity to the present need.

F inding reasons to agree, similarities among us all

G iving us a common joy which beckons an uncommon strength to tackle our problems, while

H aving respect for one another and reverence for great ideals,

I join with you to form US, which is the “we, the people” who are in pursuit of a more perfect union.

J ustice is our mind, creativity our heart and mercy our soul.

K indly we enjoin.

L osing the fickle identity of political parties, we

M ingle.

N aturally becoming the melting pot of cultures that we have advertised ourselves to be,

O ur hope is an equality that lends itself to equity—

P ure of heart, to find the divine within us.

Q uiet in ignorance,

R allying toward learning who we are together, we

S urvive to expand what we know without shame over our lacking, for

T ruth is submission to the next well-proven revelation. We

U nite with each other in our hunger and thirst for what is better. Indeed,

V ictory is sweeter when celebrated by all, and

W inning, more peaceful when there are fewer losers.

X marks the spot where there is an atmosphere wherein

Y ou and I, once and for all, are able to look one another in the eye without fear or prejudice—to go out every single day and be:

Z ealously affected by a good thing.

Take the Time to Get Better

One of the classic mistakes of the human race is that we decide to discuss, discover and disagree when failure has arrived and has smacked us in the face.

When you have gone through the trauma of not achieving your purposes, it is not the time to scrape yourself with a razor blade, trying to cut away the portions that caused your problems.

Sweeten and Smooth

The time to improve one’s life is when one has had a successful adventure, and there is no fear or apprehension, but instead, just a desire to Sweeten and Smooth. Life is about revealing what you can do, and finding ways to sweeten it and smooth it out.

A Season of Healing

If you’ve experienced a disappointment, what you need is a season of healing. You don’t need to be reminded of your shortcomings. You don’t have to play the video tape one more time, and you don’t have to place yourself in the role of the scolded child. These are useless profiles for someone who needs restoring.

Winning is the best time to critique yourself. When you lose, develop a sense of humor and give yourself time to recuperate.

The most important thing is to win.

No, the most important thing is to try.

G-Pop watches closely as these two conflicting attitudes struggle for dominance in our society.

There are those who will not be satisfied unless they are continually prospering, or at least appear to be.

There is certainly a contingency which thinks that maturity, and even spirituality, is best expressed by merely having a sense of willingness.

Yet G-Pop wants his children to be aware that both of these approaches fail to promote winners, and generally speaking, produce whiners.

After all, we don’t always win. And if we don’t win, we have two choices: we can make a ton of lame excuses or we can lie.

And likewise, it’s not always good enough to just try. We end up wondering if we could have done better, or attempt to capsulize the failure into “a learning experience.”

These two concepts run rampant across our culture, especially infesting politics and religion.

For instance, some politicians will do anything to win, and others insist they are the champions of the less fortunate–those who are really “trying hard to make ends meet.”

In the case of religion, it is a misguided juxtaposition of “God will meet your every need” and “all you will ever need is God.”

Deception.

These two ideas are not only insufficient, but flirt with evil.

The winners always deceive, and the “tryers” always blame someone for the deficit.

G-Pop wants to tell his children that the most important thing is to know.

Know what?

1. Know you listened.

It is highly unlikely that any one of us presently posses the wisdom and understanding to solve all of our own problems. It is in listening that we discover new insights from better-traveled souls–ideas which enable us to take a fresher approach.

2. Know you have good cheer.

G-Pop is not certain he’s ever seen grumping, complaining or lamenting lead to success. A certain amount of worry-free humor is necessary to find our best.

And most importantly:

3. Know you are honest.

Looking over your shoulder to see if you’re going to get caught is not a good way to be forward thinking. We may hope we get away with lying, but eventually, at an hour we least expect it, our lack of candor will be brought to the forefront. There is real power in knowing that no matter what the result may be, you were completely truthful about your situation.

As the political furor continues in our country, and winning and trying are lifted onto the shoulders of the cheering masses, it is enriching for the children of common sense to honor the importance of knowing.
